Hseb zoology notes | Phylum Arthropod classification and general characteristics

The general characteristics of phylum arthropod are as follows :


1. Habitat: It is the largest phyllum. arthropod are found in all the habitat. They are parasitic too.

2. Body form: They are multicellular organism with organ grade of body organization. They are bilaterally symmetrical. They are triploblastic.

3. Their body consists of jointed appendages or legs. Body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen. In some case , head and thorax are fused to form cephalothorax as in prawn.
4. Coelom : they are haemocoeloamate animal.

5. Respiration : They respire by gills or trachea or book lungs.

6. Excretion : The organs for this is Malpighian tubules (terrestrial form) , green gland (aquatic from ) , and coxal gland ( arachnid).

7. Sensory organ : Their sensory organ are compound eyes , antennae , statocysts.

Crustacea



1. It has 5 pair of legs for walking.
2. Their head consists of 2 pair of antaneea.
3. Their body is divided into abdomen and thorax.
4. Crustacea respire through gills.

eg : Cancer ( Crab ) , Prawn (Palaemon) , Daphnia etc


Myriapoda

1. It has many pair of legs for walking.
2. Their head consists of 1 pair of antaneea.
3. Their body is divided into head and many segmented trunks.
4. They respire through trachea.

eg : Centipede (Scolopendra) , Milipede (Julus)


Insecta


1. It has three pair of legs for walking.
2. Their head consists of 1 pair of antaneea.
3. Their body is divided into head, abdomen and thorax.
4. They respire through trachea.

eg : Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) , Butterfly (Melanopus) etc


Arachnida

1. It has four pair of legs for walking.
2. Their head do not consist of antaenna.
3. Their body is divided into perosoma, mesosoma, metasoma.
4. They respire through trachea and book lungs.
