HSEB notes | Classification and character of phylum Porifera

The characters of porifera are as follows :


1. Habit and Habitat : They are aquatic, mostly marine and few are freshwater form (eg. spongilla). They are found in colonial or solitary and are sessile. But their lavaral form are free living.

2. Organization : They are multicellular organism with cellular grade of organization.

3. Symmetry : Most of them are asymmetrical and some are radially symmetrical.

4. Locomotion : It is completly absent in them and they are completly sessile found sedentary form. But their laval are free swimming form.

5. Excretion and repiratory organs are absent . Osculum acts as anus or excreratory outlet.

6. Reproduxtion:They are hermaphroride or monoecious (having both sex organs). They reproduce asexually by budding or gemmule formation and sexually by gamete ( ova or sperm ) formation.
